7 Hollywood Films That Have Helped To Influence Fashion

There are hundreds of movies that you can choose from, including Black Swan, Clueless, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and many others. Many fashion films have had an impact on how we dress, and most importantly, the runway. The runway sets the trends. However, fashion films are able to influence fashion in a significant way. Film and fashion have a long history of being interwoven. This has led to some of the most memorable costumes and nostalgic trends that we have seen come back to life. As a fashion stylist, I’ve noticed that certain movies and pop culture references have inspired a variety of designers. Here are eight films that have had a major influence on fashion. They are still being used and recreated daily by designers around the world.

1. Black Swan

Black Swan fashion was heavily influenced by a contrast between delicate/light and dark/edgy, as well as the two lead roles of White Swan and Black Swan. This can be emulated by using a palette of blacks and greys to channel the black Swan, or a mix of pale colors such as pinks and creams for a nod towards the white Swan. See the Black Swan meaning for more about this.

2. Tiffany’s Breakfast

Audry Hepburn wearing a Givenchy black gown. The iconic movie has had a profound influence on fashionistas. Hepburn’s exquisite taste and love for velvet gloves and diamond necklaces have made this film a classic. Holly Golightly, a style icon, is obvious.

3. A Simple Favor

Although the movie did not receive the greatest reviews, A Simple Favour was a huge success. The entire fashion industry loved Blake Lively’s wardrobe. This movie was a step forward for women to wear a tailored, traditional suit. Paul Feig, the film’s director, wore three-piece power suits on Lively’s days off. It was all about the aesthetic. The best thing is that her shoes were always extravagant and candy-coloured.

4. The Devil Wears Prada

This isn’t just a fashion movie; it’s the fashion movie. The Devil Wears Prada, one of the most famous fashion films ever made, gives us a glimpse into Anna Wintour’s world. It’s packed with Chanel outfits from head to toe and gives you a glimpse into the world of ‘catty magazine’.

5. The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is the epitome of glamour and excess. Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch and Prada have all been influenced by the 70s-themed film. The film was even used to create a Bloomingdale’s clothing line that sold out in their stores immediately.

6. Clueless

Let us introduce you to the 90s movie that officially opened the door for outrageous headpieces and two-piece tartan sets. The movie also has the most quotable fashion references ever.

7. Sex and the City

We are forever grateful to Sex and the City for their fashion inspiration, from the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown to the bridal couture photoshoot, and each gal’s unique sense of style.
